Traffic Ticket Prosecution

The Office of the District Attorney prosecutes violations of state traffic laws occurring within East Baton Rouge Parish. Please note that many Baton Rouge City Police traffic violations are written as municipal ordinance violations (Title 11) which will be prosecuted by the Baton Rouge City Prosecutor in Baton Rouge City Court. If you have such a ticket, please refer to the information under the Baton Rouge City Court page. Baton Rouge City Police traffic tickets can be paid online.

If your ticket was issued by a police officer under the state traffic laws found in Title 32 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes, then your ticket will be prosecuted in District Court by the Office of the District Attorney.

If you wish to pay your traffic ticket by mail before it has formally been charged by our office, please see the back of your ticket. On the back of the ticket, you will be directed to call the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-4836 for the amount of your fine and will be advised to mail the ticket and payment to:

Please note that payment of a ticket constitutes a plea of guilty. Persons have until one day before their traffic trial date to pay their ticket.

If you wish to contest your traffic ticket at trial, please appear in Traffic Court on the 2nd floor of the new 19th Judicial District Courthouse at 99:00 a.m. on the date specified on your court notice.

Note: Not all traffic tickets can be paid in advance.  Some traffic tickets require a mandatory appearance before a judge of the 19th Judicial District Court. Examples include drag racing, passing a school bus, and traffic accidents.

Should you miss your traffic trial date, the court will issue a warrant for your arrest called a “bench warrant.”  To have this warrant recalled, you will need to personally appear in court.  You should contact the Traffic Office to schedule an appearance to have your “bench warrant” recalled.

Note: Victims of traffic accidents receive a letter from the Office of the District Attorney advising them that they should appear for trial if they desire success in the prosecution of their case.
